Merino Wool Bib Shorts, Version Two

Invest where it matters most.

Version two of the first cycling bib shorts made with Nuyarn® merino wool. Now in men's and women's.

When we launched our merino wool bib shorts, we weren't sure how many riders would take a chance on wool in the most important piece of kit they own. Then riders started sending us photos from rainy bikepacking trips in Norway, multi-day rides in the Vermont summer heat, and long days on Maine gravel. Version two is built on everything they told us.

Pre-sale now open: $260 (regular $288). Orders ship by Friday, October 30.

A new fabric

Everything starts with the fabric. Version two uses a new Nuyarn® merino wool fabric developed exclusively for Pinebury. At 245 GSM it is heavier than version one, with noticeably more stretch and better durability, but still light enough to ride year round. It is 70% RWS certified merino wool, 29% nylon, and 1% spandex, and it is comfortable from about 40°F on a fall morning to 80°F on a summer afternoon.

Nuyarn spins merino around a nylon core without twisting the fibers. The result is a fabric with more loft, better recovery, and drying speed traditional wool can't match. The nylon core adds strength where bib shorts take the most abuse.

The color is Charcoal, a deep black heather. From a few feet away it reads as black. Up close, the heather gives it texture and depth that a flat black can't.

Completely solid

The one thing we most wanted to fix from version one was sheerness in direct sunlight when the fabric stretched over the saddle. We fixed it twice over. The new fabric is heavier, and the rear panel is now a double layer of merino. Version two is completely solid, even in full sun.

Straps you'll forget about

The mesh straps on version one were light and breathable, but we knew they could be better. Version two uses a flat woven elastic made in Japan, the same kind used in the waistbands of premium garments. It is soft, finished flat on both edges, and stretches with you without curling, digging in, or leaving marks. You'll forget you're wearing it.

A chamois that keeps up

Merino this fast-drying deserves a chamois to match. Both versions use the Elastic Interface® Titan pad, shaped for men or for women, with a breathable, fast-drying Eco AirTech fabric cover that keeps up with the merino from the first mile to the last.

The details

  • Merino rear pocket: the rear pocket is now cut from the same merino as the shell, so it is soft, durable, and blends into the shorts.
  • Two side cargo pockets: thigh pockets that hold a phone, a bar, or a map without bouncing.
  • Power Grip leg bands: 2-inch elastic bands on the inside hem keep the legs in place without squeezing.
  • Refined pattern: small changes throughout based on a year of rider feedback for a cleaner, more supportive fit.

Version One vs. Version Two

Version two keeps the design riders loved and improves on everything we learned from a year of real-world miles. The biggest changes are the fabric, the straps, the chamois, and a fully opaque rear panel.

Finally, women's bibs

From the day we launched, one of the most common questions in our inbox was some version of: when are you making women's bibs? The Women's Merino Wool Cargo Bib Shorts use the same fabric, straps, and pockets as the men's, built on a women's-specific pattern with the women's Elastic Interface® Titan chamois. We're proud to finally say: they're here.

Made in the USA

Pinebury bib shorts are cut and sewn in California in small batches by makers who specialize in technical cycling apparel. Keeping production in the USA lets us hold a higher standard of quality, make changes quickly, and support American manufacturing. Small batches also mean these won't be everywhere. Performance merino bib shorts are rare. Ones made in the USA are rarer still.

Invest where it matters most

Your bib shorts carry more of the ride than any other piece of kit. They support your body, regulate temperature, and protect the places that matter most, hour after hour. That's where we think it's worth investing, and it's why we keep refining them.

Nuyarn® Merino Wool

Custom developed for Pinebury and engineered for performance. Breathable, moisture-wicking, and fast drying, with durability that defies expectations. Natural, renewable, and biodegradable.
